Karachi University teachers have strongly criticised the institution''s decision to confer an honorary doctorate degree on Interior Minister Rehman Malik and demanded immediate cancellation of the academic honour.
The demand was made in a unanimous resolution passed by the Karachi University Teachers Society during a general body meeting yesterday.
The meeting was called at the request of teachers who wanted to register their protest over "a political decision" taken by the chancellor and vice-chancellor.
"The house, which represents teachers from all the statutory bodies of the university, demands that the degree recently conferred on Interior Minister Abdur Rehman Malik must be cancelled immediately. The university''s name must not be used for political objectives and to reward ministers," the resolution said.
The discretionary powers and authority enjoyed by government officials by virtue of their status should not be misused as was done in Maliks case, the resolution said.
The teachers decided to boycott classes for two hours on October 26 to protest the decision.
If the degree given to Malik is not cancelled, the Karachi University Teachers Society will hold a meeting of its general body later this month.
The teachers contended that the honour conferred on Malik had damaged the credibility and status of the varsity that is already facing administrative and academic crises because of political interference.
The University of Karachi conferred the honorary degree on Malik on October 11 in recognition of his "matchless services to the country in the war on terror".
