GUWAHATI: With its flag hoisted at halfmast, Gauhati University paid a fitting tribute to its icon, who was a former faculty member. Thousands gathered at the university playground to have a last glimpse of the glass casket where the body of the music legend was kept.
Hundreds of students from the university, neighbouring colleges, Assam Engineering College and Government Ayurvedic College flocked the venue to pay their respects and homage to the Renaissance man.
"I have been waiting here for more than three hours and I am not feeling despaired because the wait is worth it," said Pinky Kalita, student of Pandu College, holding petals of sewali flower in her palms.
Bhupen Hazarika, who infused a feeling of strength among the youth through his music at a time when complexities and identity crisis marked the state and its people, has always been very popular with the young and the young at heart.
"Bhupenda unified the youth of Assam and tied us in such a way that no one could ever forget the aura of that man whose inspirational songs and intellectual pursuits helped the youth of Assam to understand the potency of their culture," said Saurav Sarmah, student of Gauhati University.
"The legend had a profound effect on the youth. His music transcends boundaries and appeals to all. His affinity towards the young people is and always will be ground-breaking. His music inspired young people to rise above adversities,"said Dip Pathak, another student of the university.
"We want to pay our tribute to the Assam Ratna who was also a former teacher in the university. We are planning to erect a memorial as a mark of respect for him. Naming an auditorium after him is also in the pipeline, along with a digital archive and a data centre," said Okhil Kumar Medhi, vice-chancellor of the university.
