Mumbai University - Students give courses thumbs down

The postgraduate (PG) courses offered by Mumbai University (MU) at its Kalina campus are losing their sheen among students, who prefer to take up higher education in other universities. Karen Pineiro, 21, is doing her first-year masters in political science at Delhi University (DU) after 

graduating from St Xavier’s College in Mumbai. Although MU offers political science at the postgraduate level, the Andheri resident did not even considered the possibility. “Since my final year of graduation, I started preparing to apply to Delhi University. Mumbai was never an option. The course, campus, brand, and student and faculty quality are better at DU. Job prospects after a masters from DU are also better,” said Pineiro.

For some who stay back in Mumbai after graduation, the decision is driven by the need to be close to family and home. “I wanted to stay and study in Mumbai,” said Girija Gondhalekar, a second-year German (MA) student from Borivli.

“I opted for a PG course in a foreign language because I am aware of the opportunities it can generate. There is a great demand for translators and interpreters in foreign companies that have set base in India. Also, there is serious shortage of faculty in foreign languages,” said Gondhalekar.

But even Gondhalekar feels that a larger classroom will result in better learning.

“An ideal situation would be to have a class of 15 students where there is debate and discourse, and learning is fun,” she said.
