While city colleges have been organising all kinds of festivals in from November to January, Mumbai’s Khalsa College is busy preparing to host a grand function as a part of the platinum jubilee celebrations by honouring their former coach Jaswant Singh on January 5.
Students who want to pursue a career in sports mostly opt for Khalsa College, Matunga, which was established by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. The college has been creating a history in sports, apart from educational excellence.
Principal Dr Ajit Singh said: “The college had a huge ground since the beginning and we have been producing good sportspersons but we owe a great deal of success to coach Jaswant Singh.”
A qualified hockey coach, Singh also trained students in football and athletics from 1964. “Many students played for the Indian Hockey team after that. The success gave a boost to football, athletics and weightlifting too,” stated the principal.
Jaswant Singh retired in 2000 as a sports director and since then the college has been celebrating his birthday ever year in a grand way.
Director of sports at the college and former Hockey Olympian, Gurbux Singh said, “After 2004, we started cricket, badminton, boxing, rifle shooting, karate, taekwondo and table tennis.
Basketball will also be added soon. Students participate in 32 games at the university level and 29 games at the District sports level for both boys and girls.
“We honour and invite our coach every year on this day with much fanfare. A series of events have been chalked out this year too,” said student Amandeep, who feels proud to be associated with such a college who honours a coach.
Athletics coach of the college Mary Benson said, “In his tenure our student Selma D’silva, an ex-hockey Olympian was awarded the Padmashree in 1991. Lorraine Fernandes (1976) and Joaquim Carvalho (1986) won the Arjun Awards. Khalsa students have performed wonderfully at the state, national and international levels.”
