Three University of Pune (UoP) projects devised by its former vice chancellor (V-C) and now member of the Planning Commission, Narendra Jadhav, will be implemented across the country.
Speaking to the media in the city on Thursday, members of the 12th five-year education plan steering committee, Gajanan Ekbote and Bhushan Patwardhan, said that the Pune projects would be a part of the upcoming education plan for the country.
During his tenure at the varsity, Jadhav had launched three projects: Samarth Bharat Abhiyan, where National Social Service (NSS) student volunteers could adopt a village; special senior citizen cell where the elderly could pursue doctorates easily, and disaster management courses for students.
On October 24, the steering committee comprising education experts made final recommendations for the 12th plan, which will be presented by Jadhav to the Centre. “The three projects that were started at the UoP by Jadhav on experimental basis had got a good response,” said Patwardhan.
Under the Samarth Bharat Abhiyan, all colleges under the varsity had adopted one village each in their vicinity for all-round socio-economic development. In all, 500 villages were adopted and a 15-point-programme for development, including primary education, tree plantation, water management, sanitation facilities and communal harmony, were taken up.
The senior citizen centre engaged the elderly in five activities ranging from one-day workshops to certificate courses and a special PhD programme with relaxed entry norms. The disaster management course trained all college students in handling emergencies.
Patwardhan said that the focus of the coming plan would be strengthening state universities, along with national institutes like IIT, IIM.“90% of our students study in state-run universities, but the earlier plans focussed mostly on granting funds to strengthen national universities. We have recommended that the focus be shifted,” he said.
