Schools across the state will have to forego one day of Diwali vacations to celebrate Shiksha Diwas. Most schools are shut till November 14.
The state education department has instructed all schools to gather students in the classrooms on November 11. The heads of the schools will have to read the prime minister’s message on the Right to Education to the students. Shiksha Diwas, is celebrated on November 11, the birth anniversary of the country's first education minister Abul Kalam Azad.
For the first time, the prime minister has sent a message to schools about Children’s Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, which was implemented in the state on April 1, 2010. To spread awareness among parents and children about the importance of the Act, which guarantees free education to children, the prime minister has sent a personally written letter to the education department. The department has instructed all the schools to read out the message to their students.
“Kapil Sibal, Union HRD minister, was keen to promote RTE in schools so that the word spreads to parents and they are educated about enrolling their children in school. We have told schools to call students on that day for sometime,’’ said a senior education official.
