Kolhapur, Nov 18 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today announced another grant of Rs 20 crore for the city-based Shivaji University. Chavan made the announcement at a function organized to mark the inauguration of the varsity's golden jubilee year. The university entered the 50th year of its foundation today.
The Government has already sanctioned Rs 50 crore as grant for the university's golden jubilee year projects. The varsity plans to launch projects like Yashvantrao Chavan School of Rural Development, biotech research, School of Nano Technology, Advanced Centre for Information Technology and a youth development centre, among others. Chavan also announced Rs 3 crore for a Chair in the name of late Balasaheb Desai, former Education Minister of Maharashtra), Rs 7 crore for a DNA sequencer machine for Bio- technology Department and Rs 10 crore for building an air conditioned convention centre. Ministers Ajit Pawar, Patangarao Kadam, Harshavardhan Patil, Jayant Patil, Hasan Mushrif and Satej Patil were among others who attended the function besides Vice-Chancellor N J Pawar. Speaking on the occasion, Chavan said "Maharashtra Government will support the university at every step. Not a single Indian university figures in the top 200 varsities in the world. Shivaji University should strive to figure in the prestigious list." "Shivaji University started with 34 affiliated colleges, 14,000 students and five postgraduate (PG) departments. It has now spread to 271 colleges with two lakh students and 39 PG departments," the Vice-Chancellor said.
