PANAJI: Schools in Goa will have to put the logo of the midday meal scheme on display on its buildings and print the logo on its letterheads, envelopes and registers, according to a central government directive.
The idea is to create further awareness about the scheme that provides hot, cooked meals to school students and aims at eliminating malnutrition.
In Goa, the task of painting the midday meal logo in a prominent spot on the school building has been handed over to the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA). The SSA logo has already been painted prominently on primary school buildings across Goa and the midday meal logo will now be painted alongside.
The midday meal scheme was launched in Goa from the year 2005-06. Altogether around 1,64,400 students from 1,525 government and government-aided primary and secondary schools avail benefits of the midday meal scheme in Goa. The scheme was extended to students of Class V to VIII by the Goa government from the academic year 2009-10.
Since Goa has half-day schooling, midday meals are served not as lunch, but as a snack during the interval between classes from 10.30am to 11am. Students in Goa, therefore, are served lighter foods such as 'pav bhaji' or 'sheera' as midday meals as against heavy rice fare served elsewhere in the country.
Goa's is a rare case where self-help groups supply meals to schools on contract with the state government as schools do not operate full-day and facilities such as kitchens are not available.
As per guidelines, children in classes I to V are provided with meals made up of 450 gms of calories and 12 gms of proteins and students from classes VI to VIII are provided food with a nutritional value of 700 gm calories and 22 gm proteins.
