Teachers go back to class to get lessons in RTE Act

MUMBAI: Two years after the Right to Education Act (RTE) was passed, things are finally falling into place. As schools go about implementing the Act, the state education department is doing its bit to help out: On Wednesday, its Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan conducted training sessions for teachers at 10 schools in six wards.

"The idea is to equip our teachers with teaching aides which will help them understand Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation and conduct their classes accordingly," said Vilas Kamble, education inspector of the wards.

The abhiyaan has drawn up a lost of schools which will serve as training centres for teachers. It sends out invites to teachers to attend the day-long training sessions. "We will conduct five sessions till March during which teachers will be informed about various techniques they can use to teach," added Kamble.
On Wednesday, close to 60 teachers from various schools attended their first training session at Hansraj Morarji Public School in Andheri (W). "As most schools are now scrapping unit tests, our teachers need to ensure that students don't take studies lightly," said Anjana Prakash, principal of the school. "Parents are asking us to conduct exams but we have to follow the rule book."

Teachers who attended the training session will conduct similar sessions for rest of the teachers at their respective schools. Uday Nare, a teacher who attended the session on Wednesday, said, "We are being introduced to new concepts of teaching where we make the best use of technology."
