The Department of Zoology, established in 1919 has a glorious and eventful heritage. Benefitting from the rich contributions made by a galaxy of eminent academicians, the department has produced a formidable batch of teachers and research scholars over the decades. Alumni of this department have made their marks in various institutions around the world.
Presently the department enrolls seventy postgraduate students each year. The department also runs an M.Phil course in Fishery Technology with 12 students.
In addition, a considerable number of doctoral and post doctoral fellows carry out advanced research in diverse fields. Some of the areas of research includes endocrinology, entomology, ecology, environmental biology, fisheries and aquaculture technology, parasitology, immunology, genetics, cell and molecular biology with sub disciplines like cardiac biology, cancer biology etc.
Currently with faculty strength of 13 teachers, the department makes every possible effort to impart valued teaching and research guidance to students.
The Department is presently recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India under the FIST program and by UGC under the SAP grant.
