NET is mandatory, states UGC's New University Recruitments
THE UGC in its recent meeiing held on October 22.2012 look the stock of large number of teaching vacancies in colleges across the country and non-availability of NET/SET qualified candidates and reiterated that NET would remain a mandatory qualification for lectureship.
Commission also considered and approved recommendations of the Committee to revisit UGC Regulation (Minimum Qualifications for appointment of teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges and measures for the maintenance of standards in higher education) 2010 and subsequent letter dated August 28 from HRD Ministry and approved granting of exemption to Ph.D. holders from NET and removing altogether Academy to Performance Indicator (API) and Performance Based Appraisal System (PBAS).
In its public notice dated October 12. the UGC has made it clear ih.it NFT will remain a mandatory qualification and quoted ils earlier letter dated October 2010 disapproving tendency of colleges and universities to recruit non-NET/non-SET candidates and then seek exemption for diem.
As per notification dated July 11. 2009 the UGC has prescribed NET/SLET as me minimum eligibility condition for recruitment and appointment of Lecturers in Universities/Colleges/instillation.
Candidates, who are or have been awarded Ph.D. Degree in compliance of the "UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for award of Ph.D. Degree). Regulation 2009. shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in Universities/ Colleges/ Institutions, the UGC lias specified.
UGC lamented that in the recent past, some of die universities and institutions advertised the post of Lecturers/Assistant Professor without any stipulation regarding mandatory requirement of NET/ SLET/ SET as required by UGC.
