High Court of Keralacame into being from1st November 1956, with its seat at Ernakulam. Its roots go back to the Rulers of Travancore-Cochin, to Colonel Munro - the British Resident and Diwan in the Travancore State and the political agent in Cochin State- the architect of the well regulated judicial system in both these native states, to the High Court of Madras with its tradition of a hundred years and over, to the Travancore High Court, to the Cochin High Court and to the Travancore Cochin High Court.
The High Court is a Constitutional Court in terms of Article
215. It is a court of record and has all the powers of such
court including the power to punish for contempt of itself.
Every High Court shall consist of a Chief Justice and such other
judges as the President of India from time to time deem it
necessary. At present, the sanctioned Judge strength of the High
Court of Kerala is 27 Permanent Judges including the Chief
Justice and 11 Additional Judges. Every judge including the Chief
Justice shall be appointed by the President of India by Warrant
