NET/SET for teachers appointed from 1991 to 2000


IN A MAJOR breather for over 2300 college teachers who could not clear National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Eligibility Test (SET) since last 22 years, the Maharashtra Government on Wednesday waived the very basic eligibility norm for them and decided to regularise their services. The University Grants Commission (UGC) had introduced NET or Ph D as a mandatory condition for those aspiring to become lecturer. However, despite granting ample opportunity and relaxation 2,307 teachers were unable to pass the basic test.
The teachers organisation had demanded relaxation of this condition and reaularisation of their serv-ices from the date of appointment. However, the Cabinet rejected this demand and decided 10 regularise the service from the date of issuance of GR. Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope told media persons that during next meeting, the minutes will be approved and GR will be issued thereafter. From the year 2001, the NET/SET or Ph D has been mandator) and UGC has ruled out any relaxation for post-2001 appointees.
The Government has also decided to release Rs 1,500 crore arrears of45,000college in phase-wise manner. According to Tope, ihe arrears will be disbursed in April. June and December. Out of Rs 2,000 crore arrears. Ihe siaie share of Rs 500 crore has been disbursed and Rs 1,500 crore is due from centre.
Tope also urged college teachers to withdraw their strike and warned to deduct salary using "No work no pay" formula.
Besides the Government will not hesitate in evoking ESMA against them, he warned. During cabinet meeting, the senior ministers were quite angry over tactics adopted by junior and senior college teachers by boycotting examination work. By affecting career of innocent students, mese teachers want their unjustified demands to be fulfilled, reacted a senior minister.
