Central Railway (CR)
Mumbai Provide Free Wi-Fi
The Central Railway (CR) is in talks with telecom companies to provide free Wi-Fi to commuters at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) station through which they can access the new train enquiry system that would enable them to view the status of their local train.
A CR official, on condition of anonymity said, "When a commuter enters CST and the Wi-Fi on their phone is on, they will receive a pop-up on their screen through which they can access the Internet for free via their phones."
"We are developing a system by which the commuter would get a pop-up to the link on our train enquiry website and give them access to information on the running of trains from CST for the next two hours," added the official.
The new software was developed in early October this year by CR, along with Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) that develops information technology applications for Indian Railways.
The software was then made mobile-friendly for easy access. Currently, passengers can view train timings on http://enquiry.indianrail.gov.in/ntes/.
Earlier, there was a glitch in this facility as commuters could not access the time according to station names, but instead had to key in the number of their train.
This seemed an uphill task as commuters rarely knew the train number even if they took the train at the same time everyday.
"We have solved that problem by providing the option of station names and no matter which station you are on, the timing will be available to you," added the official.
