PUTTING an end to the confusion. Management Council of Rashtrasani Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University has decided to postpone the 100th convocation ceremony for uncertain period. The entire episode has brought shame to the city and uni verity as well. According to some experts, the indecisive approach of university led to this fiasco.
In a major development, even Management Council has decided to withdraw the authorisation given to Vice-Chancellor lo take any decision regarding 100th convocation, it is learnt. It is said in the university circle that with the withdrawal of authorization, it seems there is no faith in V-C. The V-C has faced this ignominy for the first time in the history of university.
After President of India cancelled his Nagpur tour, confusion reigned supreme whether the convocation would be held on November 16 or not. To decide the fate of the convocation, the university called emergent! meeting of Management Council on Monday noon. The meeting unanimously decided to postpone the con vocation for uncertain time. The university did not come to any conclusion. While addressing media persons at Jal P Gimi committee hall. Dr Vilas Sapkal. Vice-Chancellor, could not make it clear whether university is seeking the next date of President. Adv Abhijeet Wanjari. through a letter demanded to go for next date of President for the convocation as the students should not miss the opportunity to get degrees in his presence. When asked how university should work on the issue of so-called bogus degrees which would keep on haunting again Dr Sapkal said the point raised in the complaint questioning the degrees of students of banned 250 colleges has many dimensions. Many degrees were given in this way before the year 2009 too. To son out this issue, the resolution brought in the meeting of Board of Exam in 2009, It was resolved to authorise contributory teachers or the teachers from neighboring colleges to do internal assessment of the students. In some cases, it was decided to grant permission to institution-owners to do the same. This resolution was passed in the year 2012. How those degrees can be called bogus." But V-C assured to sort out the issue before 100th convocation. He remained unanswered on whether the university would insist President to grace the convocation or not. When asked whether university would look into the reports of Local Enquiry Committee (LEG) that plays an important role in giving affiliation to colleges, VC said that the formal of LEC reports would be changed and the mechanism of LEC functioning would be reviewed. Speaking about expenses on convocation. Dr Sapkal said. "We spent on infrastructure, roads, medals, certificates would be with us forever but we would negotiate with the contractor regarding pendal and chairs. I don't know the exact amount but we have made the provision of Rs 50 lakh in budget.
