15,800 more MBBS seats coming up 

With the availability of doctors being a dismal 0.5 for every 1,000 persons in the country, the Centre has proposed to create an additional 15,800 MBBS seats, Lok Sabha was informed today.

"The current doctor-population ratio in the country is approximately 1:1,700, yielding a density of 0.5 doctors per thousand people, which is not adequate," Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad, said in a statement.

Azad said that as per a high-level expert group report which has been presented to Planning Commission, an additional 187 medical colleges are required in under-served districts during the 12th and 13th Plans. The Union government has approved three centrally sponsored schemes aimed at, among others, upgrading 58 district hospitals into medical colleges and increasing undergraduate and postgraduate seats at government medical colleges, he added.

 देशात डॉक्टरांचे प्रमाण हजार व्यक्तींमागे केवळ 0.५ टक्के असल्याच्या कटू वास्तवाची कबुली देतानाच केंद्रीय आरोग्यमंत्री गुलाम नबी आझाद यांनी देशभरात एमबीबीएसच्या १५ हजार ८00 अतिरिक्त जागा उपलब्ध करून देण्याचा प्रस्ताव असल्याची माहिती लोकसभेत शुक्रवारी दिली.

सध्या लोकसंख्या आणि डॉक्टरांचे प्रमाण १: १७00 एवढे म्हणजे केवळ 0.५ असून ते अपुरे असल्याचे त्यांनी एका निवेदनात स्पष्ट केले. १२ आणि १३ व्या योजनेनुसार काही जिल्ह्यांसाठी अतिरिक्त १८७ वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालयांची गरज असल्याचे उच्चस्तरीय तज्ज्ञगटाने योजना आयोगाला सादर केलेल्या अहवालात म्हटले आहे. केंद्र पुरस्कृत तीन योजनांना मंजुरी देण्यात आली असून त्यानुसार ५८ जिल्हा रुग्णालयांचे वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालय रुग्णालयांमध्ये अत्याधुनिकीकरण तसेच सरकारी वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालयांमधील पदवीपूर्व आणि पदव्युत्तर अभ्यासक्रमांच्या जागा वाढविण्यात येणार आहेत.
