LAXITY in implementing its own decision to include class VIll in the ambit of elementary education may result in Maharashtra Government losing more than 35,000 teachers' posts.
Over 35,000 posts of teachers are lying vacant in the Elementary Education Department in the State under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA). As these posts are lying vacant for more than 6 months, these will have to be surrendered.
In Maharashtra, classes I to VII were under elementary education. However, with the emergence of Right to Education (RTE) and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, need was felt to bring class VIII in the ambit of elementary education in order lo homogenize State education with the resi of the country.
According to sources, the Stale Government has issued notification to this effect some time ago. However, non-implementation of this notification is likely to com Stale Government dearly.
More than 35,000 posts were created for additional class. However as the posts are lying vacant for a period of more than six months, they are required to be surrendered.
Apart from these 35.000 posts, around 18,000 posts of part time instructors are also lying vacant for a long time, according to sources.
