Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) recruits Village
Administration Officers (VAO) through a common competitive test. It is a
objective style test which is open to candidates who are at least 21

It is also
mandatory for candidates to pass the TNPSC language certificate test for
those who did not have Tamil as a subject in school.

This
test is very different than those for banking jobs, jobs in railways,
and jobs in Life Insurance Corporation of India. The general syllabus of
the exam includes:
- General Science
General
Science comprises of Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. In
previous years’ question papers, most questions in this section were
asked from 6th and 7th grade textbooks. However, you might want to brush up on your general science upto your 10 grade.
- Current Events
History,
Political Science, Geography, Economics, and Science comprise this
section. You need to be well aware of Indian history as well as the
history and culture of Tamil Nadu to be able to ace this section.
- Geography
Our
solar system, disaster management, agricultural pattern, weather and
climate, and soils and minerals form some of the important topics of
this section. Again, most of the questions asked are very basic in
nature. Nevertheless, you might have to brush up what you learnt in
school.
- Indian Polity
Several questions
are asked on the Indian political scene. Judiciary in India, Human Right
charter, Corruption, Anti-corruption measures, and Fundamental Rights
are some topics you would do well to concentrate on.
- Indian National Movement
You
have to be well versed with the freedom struggle of India and important
freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi. Pay attention to the role of
Tamil Nadu in our freedom struggle, including its various important
leaders such as VOC, Periyar and the likes.
The above topics comprise the General Studies section of the TNPSC VAO exam. This section has 75 objective questions.
Aptitude and Mental Ability Tests
If
you have been preparing for competitive exams like IBPS PO and CWE, you
should be able to breeze through this section. Questions are basic in
nature, with focus on averages, ratios, HCF, LCM etc. Number series and
dice problems form a chunk of the reasoning questions in this section.
This section has 20 questions in all.
Basics of Village Administration
Since
you are applying for the post of a village administration officer,
TNPSC has a section dedicated to it in its VAO exam. Some topics of note
for this section are:
- Grants of land for cattle or dairy farm
- Levy of rents
- Basic principles related to classification of lands
- Basic information about Revenue Recovery Act
General English
The English section has 80 questions in all. It tests your basic communication skills. You will find questions based on:
- Tenses
- Synonyms and Antonyms
- Comprehension
- Error correction
- Plurals
- Degrees of Comparison

- Assistant Engineer (Civil), Water Resources Department, PWD: 50 Posts
- Assistant Engineer (Civil), Buildings, PWD: 21 Posts
- Assistant Engineer (Electrical) PWD (2013-2014): 09 Posts
- Assistant Director of Industrial Safety and Health (Formerly named as Assistant Inspector of Factories) (2012-2013): 18 Posts
Age Limit
- For Candidates belong to SCs, SC(A)s, STs, MBCs/DCs, BCs, BCMs and Destitute Widows of all Castes: Minimum 18 Years and No maximum age limit
- For other candidates: Minimum age 18 years and Maximum age 30 years
- Assistant Engineer (Civil): B.E degree in Civil Engineering or Civil and Structural Engineering OR A pass in Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations under Civil Engineering branch
- Assistant Engineer (Electrical): A degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics and Communication Engineering OR A pass in Sections A and B of the Institution Examination with Electrical Engineering as a subject.
- Assistant Director of Industrial Safety and Health: A Degree in Mechanical or Production or Industrial or Electrical or Chemical Engineering or Textile Technology.
